Chapter 10
"The Dance"
The day of the dance came quickly. Stephanie was getting ready. “Ring...Ring...” went the phone. She answered it. “Hello.” she said. “Hey! Are you almost ready?” Chris’ voice asked. “Hey Chris...yeah almost. Just have to get on my dress.” she said. “Ok...well I’m on my way. Is Matt ready?” he said. “Yeah he is.” she said. “Ok...well see ya in a minute.” he said. “Ok...bye” she said and hung up. She got in her dress. It was blue, long and sparkly with spaghetti straps. Her hair was up in a curly bun with curls around it. She went down stairs with Matt to wait for Chris. Matt was in a real nice shirt with slacks and dress shoes. He looked real nice.
“Ding-dong!” went the door bell. Stephanie went to open it. She opened it and Chris was standing there holding a rose. She smiled at him. When Chris saw Stephanie it felt like he lost his breath. ‘Wow! She is so beautiful!’ he thought to himself. “Hey!” Chris said to Stephanie, “You look great!” “Thanks...so do you. Very handsome!” she said smiling. She hugged him. “Thanks.” he said. He handed her the rose. “Thanks.” she said. Matt came out. “You guys ready to go?” he asked. “Yeah!” they said. Matt and Stephanie told their moms they were leaving and they got in Chris’ Mustang convertible and drove to the dance.
When they got to the dance they went in side. Frankie and Ashley were already there. They went to the table where they were and sat down. The girls started talking and looking at each others dress. Ashley’s was similar to Stephanie’s but purple. Then Greg and Savannah came in and went to the table. Savannah’s dress was similar to Ashley’s but pink. They all sat down and started talking. The Jesse came in with Kacey. They went to the table. “Hey guys!” Jesse said to the guys. “Hey Jester! What’s up?” they said. “Hi boys!” Kacey sarcastically as she got closer to Jesse. “Hey.” they said boringly. They sat down. Jesse looked at Stephanie and gave her a quick, half smile. She did the same back and went back talking to Savannah and Ashley. “Wanna dance?” Chris asked Stephanie as Nsync’s song “Pop” came on. “Sure.” she said as Chris grabbed her hand. Frankie and Greg grabbed their girls’ hands and went out on the dance floor. Matt saw a girl sitting by herself and asked her to dance. She said yes and they went out there. Kacey said, “Come on Jesse, let’s dance!!” As she pulled his arm he got up to go dance.
When the song finished Chris asked Stephanie, “You want some punch?” “Sure.” she replied as she sat down. Chris went to get them some punch. It was only the girls at the table along with the girl Matt met. “So...Stephanie I heard Jesse dumped you!” Kacey said with an evil grin. Stephanie looked at her, rolled her eyes and then went back talking to the other girls. Chris came back with the punch. They drank some and then went to dance some more. They danced to Aaron Carter’s song, “I Want Candy”. After it was over, Mandy Moore’s song, “I Wanna Be With You” came on. Stephanie put her arms on Chris’ shoulders. He put his hands on her waist. ’He is so sweet and handsome. I think I am falling for him.’ Stephanie thought to herself. ’Should I kiss her? She is looking into my eyes. Should I? She is so pretty.’ Chris thought to himself. Stephanie put her head on Chris’ shoulder as he brought her closer to him. They slow danced most of the song then Stephanie looked up. They were still dancing. He smiled at her as his face got closer to hers. He leaned in and his lips met hers. They kissed for the rest of the song. Jesse was watching the whole time. He knew that Stephanie should go on and still have a life even though he broke up with her, but he still felt crushed in side. After the song Chris looked at Stephanie. They didn’t really say anything...they were kind of speechless. ’Oh my gosh! That was so cool...he kissed me!’ Steph said to herself. ’I hope she didn’t mind that happening.’ Chris said to himself. They went and sat down.
“I have to go to the restroom.” Stephanie said. Steph, Ashley and Savannah went to the restroom. Kacey followed them. “Why do girls do that?” Jesse asked. “Don’t know.” Chris said. They laughed. “Hey...um...you didn’t see that out on the dance floor did ya Jesse?” Chris asked hoping Jesse wouldn’t get mad. “Yeah. But it’s cool. Stephanie has to move on, but I’m glad she is with a guy who I know and trust.” Jesse said. “Ok...thanks. I just didn’t want you to be mad.” Chris smiled. “Nah...I’m not.” Jesse replied.
Ashley, Savannah and Stephanie were in the bathroom looking in the mirror as they talked. “You guys...Chris kissed me!” Stephanie said. “Oh wow...that’s good right?” Ashley asked. “Yeah I guess...I just hope Jesse isn’t mad at Chris.” Stephanie said. “Why would he be?” Savannah asked. “I don’t know...I guess he wouldn’t be.” Stephanie said. Just then Kacey came in. “Hey ladies!” she said sarcastically as she pushed them out of the way of the mirror. “Ugh!” they said as they moved away. “So Stephanie...Jesse and I made out while you were dancing!” Kacey said. “Yeah...so...it’s not like I go with him anymore.” she replied, “Plus Chris and I are gonna go out.” “Ha...yeah! Chris has had a crush on me for like ever! He wouldn’t even kiss you!” Kacey said. “Well you know Kacey...he did kiss her...while they were dancing!” Ashley yelled defending her friend. “Yeah right! Someone is lying!” she laughed sarcastically. “Whatever!” the three girls said together as they walked out. Chris had been at the bathroom too and then stopped to listen to the girls. He heard the whole thing. When he heard the girls coming he left quickly. Kacey followed the girls out. “Chris would never go out with you. He just brought you here because he felt sorry for you!” Kacey yelled at Stephanie as Kacey pulled her around to face her. “Ok...whatever!” Steph said. ’But he told me he liked me. Or DID he just bring me here because he felt sorry for me?’ Steph thought to herself. Just then she felt someone turn her around. “Hey girl!” Chris said and then he kissed her on the lips. When he stopped he put his arm around her and looked at Kacey. They both gave her a sarcastic smile. “Ugh!!” she said as she stomped away. “Thanks...you don’t know how perfect your timing was.” Stephanie said to Chris. “You’re welcome...but I knew what was going on. I over heard you guys in the bathroom.” Chris laughed. “Oh.” the girls laughed. Stephanie kissed Chris on the cheek and hugged him. They went back to the table. As they were walking Chris said, “I talked to Jesse. He said he was ok with the me and you thing.” “Oh ok. So...we are a thing?” Steph giggled. “If you want to be?” Chris laughed. “Yeah...” she kissed him, “I do.” she said as the sat down.
